Ancient Kamiros is one of the three major Dorian cities that formed the ancient state of Rhodes, along with Lindos and Ialyssos. Located on the northwest coast of the island, this archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of its inhabitants from the 8th century BC until it was abandoned after a devastating earthquake in 226 BC. Unlike the grand sanctuaries of Lindos, Kamiros was a thriving and prosperous commercial and agricultural center.
The city is laid out on a hillside in three distinct levels, which is a unique feature. At the top of the hill is the acropolis, which featured a temple dedicated to Athena and a large cistern for water storage. The middle level contains the most impressive remains: the main residential area laid out in a grid pattern, with houses that had private courtyards and mosaic floors. Some of the houses even had their own water cisterns and drainage systems, indicating a high level of urban planning and sophistication for its time.
The lower level of the city includes the Agora (central marketplace) and the public buildings. Visitors can also see the foundations of a Doric temple and a complex network of terraces. The site is set in a beautiful landscape overlooking the sea and the coast of Turkey, making it a peaceful and scenic spot to explore. The finds from Kamiros, including beautiful pottery, jewelry, and figurines, are now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, providing a fuller picture of the city's rich cultural life.
